Working in a small city, I see the same problems facing large cities, but on a microcosm. One of the most significant concerns is the earning-potential of residents in impoverished neighborhoods. These residents may have at most a GED or High School Diploma, and although that does not reflect intelligence or work ethic, it is difficult to find employment that pays enough to cover the worker’s basic needs. Further, this position creates challenges to increase credentials to find better-paying work, which tends to perpetuate underemployment and a problematic future. Often one problem can lead to another. The first concern can lead to homelessness, which is another significant problem facing communities throughout the country. Homelessness tends to detract customers or tourists from areas where these individuals congregate or panhandle, hurting business communities. Additionally, another cause of homelessness is our insufficient mental-health system and drug-abuse problem. These two other issues compound the trouble with the homeless population.
