What Is The Most Important Role Of Nonprofit Board Members? (STUDY)
This video was chosen because it clearly addresses one of the key issues that face nonprofit organizations. The dilemma is that the Board and the Executive staff have differing ideas as to what is expected of the Board and what value the Board brings to an organization.
There are three main components to the responsibility of a Board they are money, time and talent. But, which of these is valued seems to get mixed results when speaking with executives and Board members of organizations.
The value structure is parallel in that most executives view money as the main contribution from a Board member where Board members in larger organizations do agree that money is paramount. The objectives in mid-level and smaller organization believe that their time and talent are the most important aspects of their commitment.
This disconnect is alarming because the Board and the executive staff need to be on the same page when they are assessing priorities for an organization and key priorities such as money, time and talent must be in-line with both groups. Inconsistent values will bring about dissension when important matters need to be addressed and/or voted on by each party.
