In my experience with healthcare, I feel like the most important dimensions of performance come from the six aims that were mentioned by the IOM: Safety, effectiveness, patient centeredness, timeliness, efficiency, and equity. The book states that "Some organizations have found these six aims useful in defining organizational performance and the metrics that should be included on their scorecards" (p. 315). In my own experience dealing whether the care provided was for me or for someone else, when these six aims are followed that's when you can truly define the dimensions of performance within an organization.

This also ties in with how one can tell how well an organization is performing. I believe by looking at the staff that you can tell how well an organization is performing. In my opinion and from my experience, when the staff is friendly, helpful, caring and effective with their procedures then a majority of the time that staff is performing well. You can look at it from the perspective of if everyone in that organization shows up everyday and truly enjoys working with one another, providing excellent care and openly communicate with other staff members and patients, they will more than likely follow those six aims and overall improve clinical outcomes. An organization with more positive clinical outcomes to me is an organization that is performing well.

All healthcare sectors need to follow the six aims in order to measure their performance. When it comes to hospitals, an important indicator for measuring performance is safety. When patients come to the hospital they want to feel safe and know that they are in good hands since there is always a probability for medical errors. When patients feel safe and are always safe then overall that will improve a hospital's performance. This also applies to long-term care facility centers. When family, friends, and loved ones of a patient leave a patient at a long-term care facility they would want to be ensured that no harm is bought onto the patient while they are away at the facility. Going back to hospitals and the six aims, timeliness is another indicator. Take for example a patient that goes to the ER and they are in dire need of help or in excruciating pain they would not want to experience any wait or delays to get treated would they? When patients in a hospital specifically the ER are cared to in a timely fashion that is a good indication of performance. Lastly for long-term care facilities, if the facility is truly patient-centered then that is another good indicator. Long-term care facilities that are patient-centered will not only ensure that the patient is safe and is receiving good and proper care, but they will also allow the patients to feel more independent. In long-term care facilities when patients feel more independent they are more willing to cooperate with their. Those are the most important indicators for those two sectors.
