Marlboro Man: a very successful advertising campaign over decades Unfortunately, a number of Marlboro 'men' have died of smoking-related illnesses! Tobacco is legal but potentially dangerous. Smoking causes about 19000 deaths per year in Australia. Governments have used many policies to reduce harm,
e.g.:

• high taxes on tobacco.

• prohibitions on smoking in public/work places.

-anti-smoking media campaigns.

• restrictions on the marketing of tobacco products to under-age and anti- smoking campaigns in primary schools.

• legal actions in USA for health care costs incurred by state governments: settled in 1998 for $206 billion.

-Smoking rates in many developed countries down 50% in last 30 years. -Multinational tobacco companies now focused more on developing countries with weaker regulations and larger populations. These countries will have large mortality & morbidity rates in the future.

Tobacco highlights the tension between profit (and tax revenue), free speech, and product quality/safety. Additional resource read pgs 201-203 textbook
