I am having trouble identifying if my buffer solution is a weak acid and salt....or weak base and salt. Often my questions just give me then names of two molecules and I do not understand how to differentiate.

For example this was a practice problem:

What is the pH of a solution containing both 0.1 mole of ephedrine and 0.01 mole of ephedrine hydrochloride per liter of solution?

I know how to calculate pH but I struggle with multiple problems such as this in identifying what is acid/base and what is my salt.

Any help will be appreciated as I have been going back and forth on this for days.
