a. Describe the modes of formation for the three basic categories of naturally occurring rocks. Name three rocks form each category.

b. Explain how the formation process affects how rocks are described and classified in engineering terms.

c. Identify the discontinuities that are found in rock masses, and explain the problems, in engineering terms, that these can create.

a. Describe the common rock forming mineral groups. Name two minerals from each group.

b. Define weathering in the context of rock minerals and discuss the susceptibility to weathering of the minerals named above.

Task 2:

Evaluate the usages of the various types of geological deposits (cover the common soil and rock types, as listed 1 - 7 below), clearly stating the characteristic properties that determine whether they are suitable or unsuitable for use in construction works - either as "fill", or as natural deposits i.e., as groups that civil engineering works are built on (foundations, roads, paving etc.) or though (earthworks, pipelines tunneling etc.).
