1. Explain how Modernization and Dependency theories vary in their sociological ways of looking at development in the Third World. India by explaining how they are doing in terms of social, political and economic development and how each theory would explain why they are where they are.

2.India as an example, explain how specific characteristics of your country make changing to democracy easier or more difficult. In other words, what are the conditions that promote democracy generally and how does India match up to these conditions? Be as specific by providing facts and examples.

3. Is secularization essential to development? Be sure to show you know what secularization is ? and the two sides of the debate about if it is or is not essential to development. After doing that, you will explain why you believe secularization is or is not essential. Use as many terms and concepts from the various development theories as appropriate.

4. Discuss ethnicity as a social construction and provide recent and current examples of ethnic hostilities (including examples from India, if appropriate). Speculate on the various ways that ethnic conflict can be resolved. Be specific by using facts and examples of ethnic conflict and its resolutions.
