What does "modernism" mean in intellectual and artistic terms? How did the modernist movement influence American culture in the early twentieth century?

The decade between the end of World War I and the stock market crash of 1929 saw a dramatic amount of economic, social, and cultural change in the United States. It was during that frenetic time that Jazz came into full flower as a truly American art form. Jazz encourages innovation and the free exchange of ideas and sounds. It is improvisational and diverse. It makes people move and feel in ways that seemed inappropriate to some in early twentieth-century America. But to many, it celebrated the dynamism of modern life and in fact, mirrored modernism perfectly. The writer F. Scott Fitzgerald (famous for his novel, The Great Gatsby) even coined a term for the electrified atmosphere of a modernizing America: "The Jazz Age."
