Assignment - Description
Introduction:
Socio-technical Systems Design incorporates technical, social, human and organizational factors while designing organizational systems. The principal aim is to understand the complex relationship among the human/users, technical processes and business goals.
".... technologists cannot simply leave the social and ethical questions to other people, because the technology directly affects these matters"
-- Berners-Lee
The case study entitled "Portable barcode scanner for visually impaired" presented. The link to the case study is given in appendix I. The objective of the company is "to develop a portable "all-in-one" talking barcode scanner.".
Assignment 1a Task 1
1. As a part of understanding the customer's requirement for an effective Socio-technical System Design, critique on the needs of the customer based on the case study. In your analysis, elaborate on the technical and the non-technical needs. For example, technical needs can be related to cost effectiveness "lightweight product should help visually impaired people in identifying objects through its barcode, offer face/object/currency recognition
and also live video streaming to remote locations through Skype connectivity. Additionally, users should be able to listen to music. etc."
2. Identify and justify the design challenges. You could use bullet points whenever necessary. Also, you could include use cases to justify the identified points.
Assignment 1b Task 2
3. Feedback from Assignment 1a - It is mandatory to include feedback for assignment 1a. A brief reflection on the feedback is expected which would include ways of improvement in future.
4. In identifying the requirements, the case study mentions that there was a need of ‘'.... single premise: To provide customers with greater independence through technology. to design and develop a portable "all-in one" talking barcode scanner, that will become the "eye" for the visually impaired. This lightweight product should help visually impaired people...." Analyze in the lights of Socio-technical Systems Design why this was necessary. In your analysis you could elaborate the principles of Socio-technical design, i.e., Social System, Technical System, Integration and Managing the System.
1. As a part of technical analysis for the Socio-technical Systems Design approach discuss briefly the software and hardware used for achieving the objective in the case study.
2. As a part of organizational achievement for Socio-technical System Design approach critique on the principal gains from the design as a company and the customer in your own words
Task 3
3. Conclusion - Conclude the report by providing discussion on your findings.
Further instructions:
- Do not use Wikipedia as neither source nor reference.
- Read articles from the books or the ones published in journals and conferences, or internet articles for each topic and then rewrite those using your own words.
- Use IEEE style referencing, and make sure to properly reference any diagrams/ graphics.
