Mobile health, sometimes called digital health or telehealth, is a nontraditional way of providing healthcare in which the patient and the healthcare provider are not physically together but instead utilize technology to connect and share information. Some mobile health may be an exchange of verbal information, while others utilize technology sources to transmit data from the patient to the healthcare provider, such as EKG and heart rhythms, vital signs, or a specialized stethoscope that allows the provider to hear heart or breath sounds. Mobile or telehealth systems also allow patients the opportunity to have care from a specialist without the extended drive time that is often needed for specialized care. Telehealth services also improve patient experiences when leaving the house provides a taxing effort for the patient, and also when there are transportation barriers. It also provides a layer of convenience for patients.
