Assessing the Utility of Internet Retail
1. How do you think Internet and mobile-enabled technology rates in terms of creating utility (time, form, place, and possession)?
2. Shop for a product at an online-only retailer of your choice. Then, compare the utility provided by that retailer to the utility provided by the experience of shopping non-electronically for the same product.
I believe internet and mobile-enabled technology have greatly enhanced creating utility, thus creating an online customer experience, as our text book states. internet and mobile technology have effected time in the sense that customers can now purchase items when they need it without the hassle of driving to retail stores to locate the product. Form utility has been enhanced by the Internets ability to offer products and services of all types. Consumers can purchase everything from groceries, beverages, electronics, and household items online. Place utility has been impacted by internet by the means of allowing people to do their online shopping from virtually any device that has an internet connection. Again alleviating the hassle of driving, consuming gas, fighting for a parking space, etc that going to a retail outlet entails. Finally, possession may not be as immediate as heading to a retailer and purchasing it right then, however many sites offer free shipping, express or overnight shipping, as well as many other options. So if a consumer does not need the item right away and can wait a day or so, the internet still offers the ability to purchase the item in the comfort of your own home. However similar to form utility, the amount of products and services available to purchase through internet and mobile enabled technology is endless.
One product I shopped for online, is the Yeti tumblers. Yeti's website contains all the Yeti products I am looking for, as well as color/customization options. They offer many different shipping options so I can ensure if I need a new Yeti tumbler tomorrow, I can have it delivered. Furthermore, their prices are comparable to those in retail stores, but can often find discounts or coupons that you can apply to your purchase on their website. In a retail store, you are likely to pay full price, maybe even a higher price due to markups. The advantage of purchasing in a retail tore is that you can physically see the product you are purchasing as well as own it immediately after purchase, and not wait for delivery. However another disadvantage of shopping in store is also the selection and stock of the product. If I wanted a 36oz Yeti Tumbler in white, go to my nearest authorized retailer store and find they either have no 36oz tumblers or have it only in select colors, not the full lineup. If I was to purchase online, I would have the security knowing I could purchase the color/size combination I wanted, and even the option of customization.
