1. Lemonade is a solution made by mixing water with lemon juice and sugar.

  • In this solution, identify the solvent(s) and solute(s).
  • If 2.5 moles of sugar are added to 2.0 L of a water/lemon juice solution, what is the molarity of the lemonade?Work must be shown in order to earn credit.

2. Our lab for this unit investigated factors that influence the speed at which solute dissolves. The speed of dissolving is related to collision theory.

  • Explain collision theory as it relates to the formation of a solution.
  • Discuss how collision theory can be used to explain why granular sugar will dissolve in water faster than a sugar cubes.

3. We have several different concentration units we can use in chemistry.

  • Calculate the mole fraction of each component in a solution with 6.87 g of sodium chloride (NaCl) dissolved in 65.2 g of water. Work must be shown in order to earn credit.
  • Calculate the mass-to-mass ratio of 25.0 g of salt in 105 g of water. Work must be shown in order to earn credit.

4. When the temperature drops below freezing and ice and snow fall, roads and sidewalks can become icy and hazardous. To prevent accidents, transportation crews put NaCl on the pavement, which results in a lowering of the freezing point and helps melt the ice. Remember a colligative property of solutions is that they have a lower freezing point than the pure solvent. Work must be shown in order to earn credit.

  • What is themolalityif 465 g of NaCl is added to 3.95 kg of water?
  • Calculate thenew freezing pointof this solution. As a reminder, NaCl breaks into Na+and Cl-, allowing the salt to have a doubling effect on the freezing point change. The freezing-point depression constant for water isKf= -1.86°C/mand ΔTf=mx Kf
