Argumentative Essay Assignment: Social Health and MMIW
Instructions:
This essay asks you to read a selection of articles from your textbook and the course website on the topic of missing and murdered Indigenous women (MMIW) and to respond by writing an essay in which you take up and defend a position of your own on this topic. Your goal is to persuade your reader that your position is logical and significant.
Essay Topic (adapted from p.247 of The Active Reader):
Should institutions or people play the greater role in addressing issues relating to violent racism and sexism, such as in the case of missing and murdered Indigenous women? Consider the role of the government, public health officials, and police, for instance, as well as the role of individual action (such as social media and demonstrations).
To write this essay, you will consult "Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women: The Role of Grassroots Organizations and Social Media in Education" by Kaitlyn Watson, which is in your textbook (pp.247-54). You will also need to refer to the article by Kirsten Patrick and the two articles by Kelly Barrett, all three of which are on Blackboard as PDF documents (see the "Additional Readings" folder). If you want, you can refer to other sources as well, but you are not required to. If you do use other sources, however, make sure to cite them correctly.
After consulting these essays, write an argumentative essay in which you answer the essay question above. Make sure you establish a detailed and direct thesis and that you support it with logical explanation and evidence. Your essay must cite at least 3 of the 4 articles listed above, but you can determine which article(s) you give the most space to. Avoid simply repeating the argument of one of the authors. You should also use your own opinions and observations to support your claims.
Your assignments should adhere to either MLA or APA style, and it should include an MLA Works Cited page or an APA References page, depending on the style you are using.
