Question

Consider a system of 4 processes P1, P2, P3, P4 and a single resource R1. The current state of the claim and allocation matrices (for deadlock avoidance, resource allocation denial, or in other words for a Banker's algorithm) are:

C = 3 2 9 7

A = 1 1 3 2

(e.g. process 1 claims it needs 3 of the R1, and currently has 1 allocated, etc). What is the minimum number of units of the resource needed to be available for this state to be safe. (Hint, is it safe if there is 1 available?). Make sure you justify your answer.
