Assessment item - Business memo on management failure and management

TASK

You have been asked by a senior manager in your organisation to prepare a business memo of 1,000 words on the topic of management failure to be tabled in a management planning meeting.

The meeting will be held in three weeks, and the manager has asked you to select ‘a reasonably well-known example of management failure' to ground your discussion in the memo. Having recently completed her MBA and being attuned to the importance of critical analysis and using reputable sources of information, the manager asks if ‘you would mind including the sources that you use in your memo; something like a reference list with citations. You know'.

Select a corporate crisis or incident that has been reported in the public and social media in the last ten years that appears to have resulted from one or more management practice failures. The scope of the management practice failure may be related to one or more topics that you have studied in this subject. Prepare a critique of the reported management practice failure/s by answering the following questions in short answer format.

1. Describe the corporate crisis and the evident management practice failure/s and outcomes.

2. Using material that you have studied, plus related academic and professional literature, identify relevant management practices/functions that appear to explain the failure of management practice.

3. What management competencies are important in the action that you would have taken, or advised others to take above? Then, explain how the effective exercise of these competencies would have helped to prevent or better handle the failure in management practice that was evident, Finally, comment briefly on your own strength and scope for improvement in this area/s, using a brief example.
