Exercise vs Myeloma - A Thematic Analysis
Prepare a report to show an inductive approach to analysing qualitative data, using a transcript from a focus group interview of myeloma patients that had participated in a preliminary exercise study conducted at St. Georges.
Qualitative Component
• Transcript of a focus group of patients with myeloma who have been participating in a pilot exercise intervention, prior to a full intervention study.
• The intervention was run in a gym in UCL, and participants had been attending every week for between 2 to 5 months to begin with, and then tailoring off to once a month.
• The study was given ethical approval by UCL
• Five participants attended the focus group.
• Focus group was held during the daytime in a side room to the gym at UCL, with refreshments provided.
• The aim of the focus group was to find out people's experiences of attending the programme prior to participating in the full study.
• Focus group run by a facilitator and assistant; it was recorded with participants consent and transcribed verbatim
• You need to analyse the transcript using a qualitative methodology your choice. Choice of methodology should be underpinned by a theoretical justification.
• Report (2000 words, excluding quotes or extracts) should describe and reference your methodology, choice of underpinning theories a the coding, categories, and themes you have found. Appendices a references are not included in the word count.
