Often when providing group therapy, you may observe a client in a crisis, it is important to listen and be keen of subtle cues which may indicate history/presence of trauma. Being honest in ackowleding that the coping mechanism is, for the client, doing whatever they intend it to do. The problem is that the coping strategy is only temporary. You may have heard or seen counselors use contracts as a method of preventing client self-harm. However, therapeutic contracting is complicated because of issues of power and control: as therapists, we want to avoid becoming the client's external locus of control, their "reason to not harm or reason to live." We will discuss this further in next week's discussion also but please share your thoughts.
