Question

One of the most common Archaea present in bovine guts is Methanobrevibacter ruminantium. This microbe uses hydrogen and carbon dioxide to produce methane and energy. Carbon dioxide is also used to produce building blocks for nucleic acids and proteins. There are many different microbes like protozoans and fungi that help digest hay and grass which provides nutrients to the cattle; however, in the process they produce hydrogen and carbon dioxide, which is used by Methanobrevibacter ruminantium. Methane serves no purpose to the cattle. These microbes can be difficult to study since they require special chambers devoid of oxygen. Methane is a major issue since it is a greenhouse gas. Farmers are trying to reduce the amount of methane that is released by cattle by interfering with methane production. 1) If you were to isolate this microbe, where would it grow in a fluid thioglycolate media tube? Explain. Would these microbes be considered psychrophiles, psychrotrophs, mesophiles, thermophiles or extreme thermophiles?
