Question

The human nervous system is extremely metabolically active and has high energy demands. On average, the nervous system requires approximately 0.67 mole (120 grams) of glucose every day in order to maintain maximum function, which is approximately 60% of the glucose requirement for the entire body. The energy contained in 0.67 mole of glucose is approximately 420 kilocalories. Nerve cells produce 32 moles of ATP for every mole of glucose. Calculate how many mole of ATP the nervous system releases from glucose every day. ATP provides chemical energy for nerve cells to function. Hydrolysis of ATP releases 7.3 kilocalories per mole. Assuming the nervous system uses all of the ATP it generates from glucose every day, calculate how many kilocalories of chemical energy it uses.
