Obesity is referred to as an abnormal buildup of body fat. The United States has the highest obesity rate in the world. Adult obesity rates are approaching 40 percent and over 1/3 more are overweight. Total body fat and body mass index (BMI) are strongly linked when screening for obesity. BMI, which is based on an adult's height and weight, is used all over the world to define overweight and obesity. As we know, for adults, a BMI of 30 or greater is considered obese and a BMI of 25.0 to 29.9 is considered overweight. However, how body fat is distributed is a better way to tell if someone is at health risk than weight or BMI. Body fat is stored in three components, one being visceral or intra-abdominal fat, and is recognized as a pot belly or apple shape. One can measure waist circumference by measuring around the abdomen with a tape measure to assess central adiposity. Waist circumference is important to assess because having increased central adiposity is highly correlated with metabolic abnormalities and chronic disease even if BMI is normal.
