According to Merriam-Webster's dictionary, an advocate is "one who pleads the cause of another." Veterinary technicians give a voice to our patients by discerning their needs using our clinical observations. Vet techs alert the client, veterinarian, or other staff members, and provide any assistance the patient needs. This function may be referred to as a patient advocacy.

For example, an arthritic dog comes in for a physical exam and appears to be limping. The clients states that the dog has been slowing down lately, but "he is just getting old." Based on the dog's behavior, you believe his pain may not be adequately controlled. As a veterinary technician, you have an ethical responsibility to take action to ensure the dog gets the help he needs.

In your first post, describe a situation on-the-job where one can act as a patient's advocate. Address the following:

What help could a patient need? How can you determine this? Describe how you can use critical thinking in your assessment or observation.

What action can you take to be a "voice" for the patient? What are the possible outcomes?
