Question

A new study was released related to mental health and pediatric hospitalizations. This is impacting most of our communities. There were 4.8 million pediatric hospitalizations between 2009 and 2019 (Reinberg, 2023). However, acute care hospitalization for mental health problems, such as attempted suicides, suicidal thoughts, or self-injury, rose significantly in 2019, from 31% in 2009 to 64% in 2019 (Reinberg). From a public health perspective, what are the factors that surround this very concerning trend. We know that anxiety and depression play a role. What role does social media play? What role does family structure play? There are so many pieces to population health issues.
