Describe a couple examples of your experiences as a member of informal and formal groups in your life:

1. If you can, give an example of an informal group that you belong to.

How did this group come about? What is basis for belonging to it?

Does this group have any shared norms about what you will do, how you will act, how you will communicate with each other? If so, what are these norms?

Do different people in the group seem to have different roles? For instance, is there someone who acts somewhat like a leader? Or is leadership shared? Are there other informal roles in the group?

2. Describe an experience - good or bad - with a formal group, either a team of some kind, a committee or task force, etc.

a. Explain why the experience was for you bad or good. What was it about this formal group that caused you to experience it either positively or negatively?

b. What did you learn from this experience about the keys to success for a formal group? (NOTE: Please don't say "Good teamwork!" Be specific.)

3. Do you act the same when you are interacting with a group as when you are with another individual? In other words, does a different side of your personality come out in interacting as part of a group? Explain.
