As we get started this week, it might be helpful to define these terms. What are the definitions of these words?

According to our course glossary:

Prejudice is " A negative attitude toward a group and persons perceived to be members of that group; being predisposed to behave negatively toward members of a group" (Glossary, 2018).

and Discrimination is " Actions or practices usually carried out by a member of a dominant group, which have a negative impact on members of subordinate groups " (Glossary, 2018).

Let's talk about the difference between the word "prejudice" and the word "discrimination". We all have biases about things. It is natural human behavior. For many people, biases manifest as prejudices against certain groups. It is actually fine to have a prejudice, as long as you don't act on it. Once you act on a prejudice by treating someone differently because of the group they fall into, you are discriminating. Discriminating is unethical behavior.

Is having a prejudice, but not discriminating against someone because of it, still unethical?
