1. Discussion

Part I: Meet and Greet

1. Share what you feel comfortable sharing (career, educational goals, family life, hobbies).

2. What are three things from your life that impact your communication?

Part II: Discuss how learning to communicate professionally will help you to interact effectively with people from a range of economic, education, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds as you communicate in both peer and subordinate roles with older colleagues.

2. Discussion

In this Discussion let's focus on "hidden messages" or subtext.

First, review/read a business letter or email that you have received at work or at home.

If you have not received a letter or email-- these are becoming quite rare! Review an online newsletter or blog posting or even business text.

Next, consider the nonverbal messages surrounding the written message.

Do they support the verbal message or not? If not, what could the sender have done to ensure that the verbal and nonverbal messages matched?
