Assignment:

Pen or pencil, medium weight paper or cardboard, lightweight paper (notebook or sketch). Scissors or utility/exacto knife. Additional materials may include crayons, color pencils, or any other color art materials you may have.

Instructions:

Screen printing, in its simplest form, begins with creating a stencil. This enables the artist to create multiples of the same image.  We won't be screen printing, but we will use a stencil to create multiple works of art.

1. Using a medium weight piece of paper or cardboard (cardstock or something the weight of a cereal box is ideal), draw a simple, recognizable shape.  This shape should be around 5x5" or larger.
2. Cut out the shape that you've drawn.  This will be your stencil.
3. On a piece of notebook or drawing paper, trace your stencil cutout at least twice. Use a separate piece of paper for your second tracing if preferred.
4. In each of your traced images, draw or paint a pattern. You may use linear patterns, splashes of color, or additional shapes and images.  Be creative - there is no wrong approach to this assignment!
