Question
Reply on The Mediterranean Sea is one of the largest seas in the world, with millions of visitors per year, and home to more than 500 million people. However, it is not immune to the effects of climate change. According to the UN Environment Programme, the region around the Mediterranean is warming 20% faster the the average of the rest of the world. This rapid increase in warming will cause the region to have less precipitation, more flooding and erosion, and warmer water. This change has also caused intense heatwaves in parts of the region. Spain in particular has suffered tremendously from drought in the past couple of years. Climate change in this area is extremely bad for multiple reasons. One main reason is for the effect that it will have on the crops that are grown in this region. A large portion of the worlds wheat and olives come from this region. According to the IPCC, it is highly likely that these changes will reduce the crop yields in the region. This loss of yield will reduce the amount of money farmers can make and it will hurt the economy. The Mediterranean is a highly diverse area, being home.
