Question

We begin a discussion of those medications common to mental health. Post a simple case scenario of a patient and the medications they are on that are psychotropic in nature. This presentation need not be complicated. You may want to simply present their diagnosis and those medications that are related to this overall area of nursing practice. Allow yourself to consider why this patient has been ordered these medications, their effects, and their impact as it relates to their quality of life (this includes noncompliance and its consequences), as well as interactions. Again, in keeping with your past and ongoing posts, continue to contribute to not only the discussion but also add to the comments expressed by others. Please include literature that is not only within the usual 5-year scholarly range, but that goes beyond the text and professional organizations. It is the hope this week that you will recognize that many of your patients are on medications deemed "psychotropic" in nature and that they are not considered as such due to the number of times you see them in your practice.
