An infant born at 26 weeks' gestation is admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit. He is treated with surfactant and mechanical ventilation for respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). Umbilical central lines are placed through which he receives all his medications and parenteral nutrition. On day 9 of life, he is noted to have temperature instability, decrease in his hemoglobin, and increase in his platelets. Blood cultures are sent to the laboratory. In addition to antibiotic therapy, what would be the most appropriate next intervention in treating this patient?
