Question

Proximate composition including moisture content, total fat, dietary fiber content and ash content (total minerals) were measured by gravimetric techniques in Lab . Explain the advantages and limitations of methods used in measuring the proximate composition of the
food.

Method used for extract total fat: Soxhlet extraction

Method used for extract dietary fiber: washing the sample with buffered sodium lauryl sulfate detergent

Method used for extract mositure content: dried sample to constant weight in an oven and the loss of weight is equivalent to the moisture content of the food.

Method used for extract ash: the inorganic residue of food after the organic matter has been burned away (oxidized) is called ash, which is equivalent to the total mineral content.
