1. A strip of metal is originally 5 feet long. It is stretched in three steps, first to a length of 6 feet and then to 7 feet, and finally to 8 feet. Show that the total true strain is the sum of the true strains in each step; that is, the strains can be added. Show that, using engineering strains, the strains for each step cannot be added to obtain the total strain. Why are these two measures of strain nearly equal for low values, but differ markedly for higher values? (Hint: plot both strains vs step number and remark on the curves.)

2. Using a simple balance beam ND known weight, measure the weight of an empty 12 oz pop can in grams. You MUST take into account the weight of the balance beam itself. Show your algebra and your method of measurement. (Hint: right-hand and left-hand moments about the fulcrum must be equal.)
