When oil-based THC is consumed (ie: in gummy, oil, or butter form), it takes a while to take effect as it needs to first be absorbed through the small intestines and then transported through the body to reach the cannabinoid receptors on the membranes of cells that it binds to. Because of this, the consumer may take a higher dose than intended while they wait the 1-2 hours to feel the effects.
Some companies that produce edibles have been working on producing fast acting THC powders. This makes it less likely for the consumer to take too much, since they can feel the effects more rapidly. This allows the customer to make a more informed decision about the THC dose they would like to take. And it allows the customer to feel THC effects from their edible more quickly.
1. Each packet contains 1 gram of powder but 5 mg of THC. The company recommends consuming between 5 and 10 mg of THC per hour. You decide to start with 1 packet and see how you feel before taking any more. The directions say to dissolve 1 packet in 8oz of water, but you don't have a container labeled with ounces. Instead, you have a beaker from your lab kit labeled with metric units, milliliters. How much water should you measure in mL in the beaker before dissolving the powder into it? Your answer should include at least 1 digit to the right of the decimal. (Hint: 1 oz of water is equal to 29.6 mL)
2. You are later texting a friend who is also considering taking the THC powder, but they don't have a measuring device with ounces or mL increments. Their kitchenware only has increments in liters. How many liters should you tell your friend to dissolve the powder into?
3. Do you think this friend is going to be able to accurately measure the right amount of water to dissolve the packet into? Why or why not? Is this concerning? Explain.
