ME7712 Engineering Projects and Risk Management Assignment - School of Engineering and the Environment - Kingston University London, UK
Title of Assessment - Write an essay to discuss the implementation of Change Management techniques into real life case study to improve key parameters and performance for large scale project.
Module Learning Outcomes - The following module learning outcomes and professional body learning outcomes are tested in this assessment:
1. Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the essential ingredients in project management and the criteria of a successful project.
2. Monitor and ensure the different stages of a new project are within the time and cost constraints, and to establish exit criteria for each of the stages.
3. Apply various techniques to undertake a new project, and to produce necessary documentations required by all project stakeholders.
4. Demonstrate an in-depth ability to critically appraise the opportunities and threats of a given project proposal.
Assessment task and specific terms -
Assignment title: Change Management in Project Planning (individual)
The assignment is a great opportunity for you to investigate how Change Management techniques are used in practice to imply structural changes into real life organisations. Also the assignment will further explore the wider benefits of using Change Management in strategic applications. In addition to the lecture materials, students are expected to carry out further literature reading through books, journals and the internet.
Assignment brief - Students should read through and study the provided case study below, and work through some suggested headings related to the change management, engineering and operations within the given company. Students are expected to widen their literature reading in other areas of investigation to support the overall case.
Based on the areas of investigation above, students should write a report to discuss the change management, action planning in the chosen project and organisation, and also to make recommendations for future improvement. Where appropriate, students should also discuss the project performance concept, and how to turn failures into success in your report's action plans and conclusions.
Depending on the research materials you can find, you may also discuss other issues if they are relevant. The minimum standard of the report should contain the following structure: Executive summary, content page, Introduction, Discussion, Investigation, Proposed solutions in each chosen area with recommendations, and a final conclusion.
Report structure and headings are only suggestions, and you are not expected to investigate in all of them, bearing in mind there is a words limit of 4,000, excluding figure, diagrams and appendices)
There are two approaches you may consider using - 1) either discuss the project as a whole, or - 2) identify a specific failure within that project. Where appropriate, explore the current weaknesses within the operation functions, and how they can be made more efficient by implementing the change management techniques.
The learning outcomes of this assignment is to demonstrate your Understanding and Evidence of Research on the Change Management applications, including any other relevant OM concepts, tools and techniques covered in the lectures (also from reading materials). Remember you are not just reporting what happened, but HOW YOU ANALYSED THEIR PROBLEMS, RESOLVE, DISCUSS, AND RECOMMEND HOW TO IMPROVE THEIR OVERALL PERFORMANCE.
Change Management Assignment -
Part A - Change Management General Overview
Evaluate the calibre of any change management techniques employed so far on the project. And highlight the key weaknesses on this project?
Can you project manage the overall process differently? Establish an A- K-D-A-R structured format in details to implement your own proposed change management strategy.
Part B - Project Management and Planning
Given the verbal information provided by the Head of Housing and Community Safety, develop from scratch a one-page project plan using the PDCA + A3 application technique (as if the project had not commenced).
Your PDCA chart should clearly indicate the critical; key success factors, detailed cause analysis, clear tasks, tangible activities and implementation plan. Also propose A Go-Live date for your change management plan, while ignoring the progress and resources at this point.
Part C - Engineering Change, Cost Management and Budget Creation
Update your proposed strategy plan with the progress of implementation provided. Using this information, extrapolate forward with effect from your proposed Go-Live date, and establish a clear working program, step-by-step activity to assess the chances of the project being able to meet all targets outlined.
Assuming that the project had run perfectly to the schedule outlined, with all contract personnel working as defined on the tasks indicated as given on the RESULTS. Now you need to generate an overall budget plan for the project. And Design new department structure of your own judgment, to improve system performance, overall efficiency in percentages, and reduce cost. You are allowed to nominate new contract staff, and any required additional tools, such as, new PC hardware, software, technologies to achieve your action plan targets.
Part D - Overall Quality Of The Report
Overall quality of the report, Structure, Content, Tables, and Figures.
