ME604 Detailed design and Implementation Progress - Melbourne Institute of Technology
Purpose
a. Demonstrate the ability to conceptualize, research, design, plan and execute a substantial capstone project;
b. Adapt and apply the knowledge and skills acquired over the core units of the course in planning and executing a capstone project in an area related to telecommunications;
c. Demonstrate the application of knowledge and skills with a high level of personal autonomy and accountability while being part of a team-based working environment.
Assignment - Detailed design and Implementation Progress
Purpose of the assessment:
The purpose of this assignment is to develop skills on detailed design, prototype and implementation plan of projectof the chosen topic and write the project scope and requirements report.
Description of the assessment:
1. Background
This assignment seeks to motivate student to develop detailed design and implementation skills.
2. Requirements
The implementation of the project is expected to begin in Week 1 as this unit builds upon the Project 1 unit. Students are expected to submit on Moodle a detailed report of the project design and prototype. In this stage, student uses the information gathered from the updated literature review, simulation in the project 1 to propose and plan their implementation of the project. In addition, student needs to clarify their plan in order to accomplish the project by the end of the trimester. This assessment contains two parts: part (A) and part (B). Part (A) is presented in the lab and part (B) (short report) is required to be submitted on Moodle. The purpose of this assessment is to assess student's plan for project design and report on:
Part (A) Demonstration of Detailed Design and Implementation Progress
The presentation for this section should be a PowerPoint set of slides which detail your design. The presentation should be submitted through Moodle and must include the following information:
• A clear demonstration of the proposed design according to the topic aim.
• A clear discussion of the proposed methods of implementation in the class.
• A clear presentation of the calculations, system architecture and also indication on resources needed to implement the project.
• A clear demonstration of the proposed circuit design/model/simulation setting, hardware/software, implementation and system integration.
• A clear demonstration of the expected outcome for project and each part/module of the implementation.
• Broken down the project logically into a set of specific tasks. A good design breaks down the project into standalone modules which when completed individually can be assembled to result to the complete project or product.
• Clearly describe these tasks and the approach to be used to accomplish each task described.
• For experimental tasks, clearly describe the experimental equipment and specific techniques that will be employed in the project.
• For design tasks, clearly identify the tools or approaches to be used for each task.
• Clearly demonstrate any simulation that may be involved in the design and implementation. Note that many engineering and scientific projects require simulation. In this step the engineer uses models and software with the design equations to mimic the behavior and expected performance of the expected practical implementation. Simulation helps the engineer to fine tune his/her designs, adjust values of variables and parameters to ensure that expected performances can be achieved with the hardware and software resources to be purchased and used. Simulations normally lead to results with graphs and charts.
• Clear demonstration of plan in each week in order to accomplish the design and implementation by the end of the trimester
Part (B) Project Report
• Report should contain:
» Cover page.
» Properly formatted with Table of Content.
» Professional report writing: proper check on spelling and punctuation and grammar.
On length - students were given a guideline of 4-6 pages, but it was not enforced as a hard limit. Therefore points willnot be deducted if this limit is exceeded.
• Summary of the proposed design and implementation
» The design summary should provide a clear, concise summary of the project for a reader. The summary should identify:
- The objectives/aim of the project.
- The methods to be used to achieve the objective.
• Updated literature review
» Present the literature review focused on the topic, the methods used, the types of results already obtained by other engineers and the performances of similar systems as found in the reviews.
» Report should have the literature review pointing out ideas on how similar projects were undertaken in the past.
» Report has the literature review formally critiqued and also appraised the works of others using acceptable technical language.
» Has the literature review contained paper up to date (published within the last six to ten years)?
• Detail the implementation plan included (Project system design, resource, budget, simulation, implementation, prototype and plan )
» Clarified/detailed their plan in order to accomplish the project by the end of the trimester.
» Clear plan in each week in order to accomplish the design, implementation by the end of the trimester.
