Channel Materials in Buildings and Their Impacts on Radio Frequency Wave Propagation

1 Introduction
Communication channels continue to be an area of great interest to telecommunication operators, radio and microwave equipment manufacturers, and research engineers. Buildings are communication channels and continue to be sources of strong signal degradation due to the types of building materials in use. In this Assignment 1, a study of the channel characteristics of building materials need to be undertaken

This requires your reading, understanding and reviewing of current literature on the subject communication channels including lecture 1 in ME602. The review should include not less than 10 papers. The more the number of journal and conference articles you review the better.

The review should be very detailed (At least 5 pages). It should have detailed summaries of the papers you have read, written in your own words. Initially give an overview of the characteristics (permittivity, permeability and conductivity) of building materials in use in Melbourne and indeed most big cities worldwide. Use your own words to summarise your review in a report.

[Note: You should not cut and paste text and equations from people's papers. Paraphrase what you read in your own word to demonstrate your own understanding of the subject matter. Type them yourself and use an equation editor to type them. Also, do not dump Figures and Tables but to legibly have captions for them.]

2 Assignment 1 Part A
Part A of Assignment 1 is a formative assessment. It is required that you undertake it to learn and improve your understanding of the unit and how to communicate through reports in telecommunication in general.

Every medium in a channel can be characterised using its permeability, permittivity and conductivity. These attributes determine how a medium influences a radio frequency signal when it propagates through it. In this part of Assignment 1 each student is required to undertake a study of various media around and in the house where they live. The media of interest are given in Table 1:

Electrical Properties of Building Materials
All building materials have distinct electrical properties which impact how radio frequency waves propagate through them. This assignment enables you to understand and appreciate the length of study that is required in building a good house (electrically) will enable efficient signal reception from a mobile communication network. Therefore investigate the properties of building materials.

1. Based on your investigation and research complete Table 1 with correct values for the permeability, permittivity and conductivity of the media represented in the Table. All references used in obtaining these values must be correctly given as part of your report;
2. Report on how communication channels are statistically modelled;
3. Study and report on Debye's equation which models complex permittivity. Explain the model in your own words and how it is used to describe the impact of complex permittivity in signal propagation (several journal articles need to be reviewed).

3 Assignment 1 Part B

Impact of Building Materials on RF Signal Propagation
A bedroom has brick veneer wall 20cm thick and height 5m. The floor has carpet 10mm thick. It has a concrete ceiling of thickness 15cm on top of which is laid a heat retention foam 20cm thick. The roof is laid with roof tiles at a distance of 3m above the ceiling. Draw this structure and label it correctly. The label should show values for the permeability, permittivity and conductivity estimate for each of the materials mentioned in this section (based on your choice of materials).

1. A 5G radio frequency (RF) signal is received in the room by a 5G handset operating at 5.4GHz. Consider that the 5G signal travels as a ray from the roof into the bedroom. Sketch the path of the RF ray from the roof to the handset paying attention to the refractive indices of the various materials used to construct the bedroom;

2. Estimate the skin depths of the materials used in constructing the room;

3. Calculate the speed of the radio frequency signal through each of the materials in 2. List the speeds in a table;

4. Calculate the self-impedance of each material and list them in a table.

4 How Your Assignment will be assessed
You will be assessed as a minimum in all of the following:
1. Demonstration of understanding and knowledge of communication channels
2. How you categorize different communication channels statistically
3. Ability to explain the impact the properties of communication channels including permittivity, permeability and conductivity
4. Ability to critique the papers you have read and to draw relevant conclusions
5. Correct referencing using the IEEE referencing format
6. Presentation of your report and being able to format, number equations, tables and figures appropriately
