If you are trying, for example, to understand why one of your coworkers incessantly asks questions about how a work process will unfold, or why another brags constantly about his accomplishments, or why someone else steps out of a meeting when a disagreement starts, you might explain these behaviors as direct reflections of individual needs-whether those needs are conscious or subconscious. When we apply this in the workplace, we know that some of us need recognition, visibility, control, and attention. Others need friendship, social contact, and close personal relationships. Yet others need order, certainty, structure, and predictable outcomes.

Needs theories focus us on remembering that people act and interact with others in ways to help them satisfy their diverse personal needs and preferences.

Consider the various needs theories of motivation (Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, Alderfer's ERG Theory, McClelland's Manifest Needs Theory, Lawrence and Nohria's Employee Motivation), which theory is most applicable to you and how you are motivated?
