MAT101 Vector and geometry application
Learning Outcome 1: Demonstrate a working knowledge of mathematical fundamentals to software engineering.
Learning Outcome 2: Apply discrete mathematics, pre-calculus, geometry and analytic geometry.
Learning Outcome 3: Examine foundational vector mathematics for application within software engineering.
Assessment Task
Solve general problems using vectors, trigonometry and geometry in a visual programming language that models problems commonly faced by software developers when writing software.
Context
This assessment provides you with the opportunity to deploy your understanding of vectors and geometry to solve problems that software developers commonly face when writing software. These problems will demonstrate the usefulness of these mathematical tools and provide context of where these tools can be applied to solve complex spatial problems. Upon the completion of this assessment, you will have solved numerous unique problems common to software development that you can then use within your own software development efforts to overcome similar problems in the future. You will have generated general algorithms that map directly to their implementations in programming languages and solved problems in a format that models visual scripting that could be executed by a computer.
Vectors, circles, triangles, lines, points and other geometric primitives are the fundamental tools used to model and simulate spatial environments within software. These tools are critically essential for game developers to master, as spatial modelling and simulation form most of the logic within games. These tools are also highly useful in artificial intelligence and general software development, as applications, datasets and models frequently comprise spatial data and computation logic.
Instructions
To successfully complete this assessment, you should have a good understanding of the mathematical concepts covered in Modules 9-11, specifically, the concepts of trigonometry, geometry and vectors. The workbook contains five (5) unique questions that are solvable using the mathematical tools provided in the subject materials. You can access the workbook via the Assessments page on Blackboard.
Unlike previous assessments and learning activities that required you to solve problems based on a specific case and in isolation, this assessment focuses on how to apply independent geometric tools to define algorithms to solve complex problems that directly map to how you implement them within a programming language. Instead of solving specific cases, you will find a general solution to a problem resulting in a mathematical formula. Finally, you will solve complicated problems that require numerous independent operations to reach a valid result. These steps are presented in a visual scripting format that models how a computer would execute each step to reach a final result.
In this assessment, you are provided with a workbook with 10 unique questions that contain real- world mathematical problems that upon solving, you could directly implement into software and that are solvable with algebra, trigonometry and geometry.
