MATE401 Selection of Materials in Engineering Design, University of Wollongong
Topic - 'Continuous Casting Rolls'
ASSIGNMENT:
Each group has to research the materials and processes used to manufacture a consumer product or a component used in industry. Your group's task is to prepare a short report answering the following questions:
• What material(s) are used to manufacture the product in industry and why were these materials selected?
• How is the product manufactured and why is it made this way?
• Can the materials or process selection for the product be optimised? The report has to contain the following sections:
1. Identification of materials and processes (36/80):
Identify the materials and processes used to manufacture the product in industry. For more complex products, refer to the materials and processes used to manufacture the individual parts, as well as the processes used to join these parts into subassemblies, and finally into the end product. In your report, include a discussion on any heat treatments or surface treatments that are performed to improve the properties or design life of the product.
2. Optimised selection (36/80):
Conduct an optimised selection process for each part of the product. The optimised selection process should consist of translation, screening, ranking and documentation. The interaction between properties, shape and process needs to be considered. For process, you will need to estimate the market size.
3. Presentation and grammar (8/80):
Structure, physical layout, referencing and technical language of the written report.
Your group will be required to present your project (15 minute presentations) during the scheduled lecture and tutorial times in Week 12. Attendance of all presentation sessions is mandatory (whether your group is presenting or not).
