MAT 115 Project Caffeine Level And Sleep Disruption
Objectives - While working on this projects students will learn exponential functions in the context of half-life of caffeine. In addition, students will reflect on caffeine level in their body as a source of potential benefits and dangers.
ASSIGNMENT 1: Collecting Data
1. Check the link below for content of caffeine in various drinks. In case if your drink does not appear on the list use approximation.
2. Record the times and amounts for each of your caffeine intake during the day (feel free to add more intakes if appropriate). If you drink only one cup of coffee per day, you can add occasional or hypothetical second cup in the afternoon to monitor possible levels of caffeine and its effects on you.
3. What time do you plan to sleep? Calculate the time (in hours) between each caffeine intake and your time of sleep.
4. Calculate the amount of caffeine from each intake at your time of sleep using C(t) = C0·2-t/6.
5. Your total amount of caffeine at your time of sleep is the sum of the amounts above.
ASSIGNMENT 2: Analysis of gathered evidence
Use Maple or a graphic calculator to represent your data on a picture and based on it respond to the following questions.
Briefly describe your caffeine habits. Are you a frequent or occasional coffee drinker? How would you describe the influence of coffee on your energy level throughout the day? Does coffee help you with your daily tasks?
Analyze the graph of your caffeine level from the following perspective: when is your caffeine level above 60 mg?
ASSIGNMENT 3: Framing an issue
Declare the purpose of this project, the process of collecting the data, and the analysis. Do you think that your sleep is or is not affected by caffeine level?
ASSIGNMENT 4: Drawing conclusions supported by evidence
If you would make adjustments in your caffeine intake, how would you justify them? Or how would you justify your decision of not making adjustments?
Did you find this project engaging? Are you interested in researching caffeine level and the influence it has on people? Would you like to optimize caffeine intake to obtain an optimized performance without causing sleep disruption? Reflecting on this topic may help you on your career path especially if you are planning to major in natural sciences or nursing.
