Question

Despite Antonie van Leeuwenhoek's observations of microorganisms in 1675, most discoveries linking microbes to infectious disease occurred almost 200 years later. During this "Golden Age of Microbiology" (approximately 1857-1914), people like Pasteur, Koch, Lister, and Fleming made most of the most significant discoveries in germ theory, antisepsis, and antibiotics. Hundreds of millions of lives have been saved because of these advances.

Many of the discoveries of early pioneers in microbiology were not accepted when first introduced. Please choose one of these discoveries and explain why these ideas were initially rejected and how they were ultimately accepted. How does this relate to our acceptance of new ideas?
