Within this unit, you have learned about the introduction of the Employment Equity Act by the Canadian federal government in 1987, an initiative to actively promote the employment of women, Indigenous people, persons with disabilities, and members of a visible minority. The Act's intent was clear; remove employment barriers while promoting equality of the four designated group members. In the same vein, you have learned of the strategic importance of diversity. When managed properly, it may provide an organization with a competitive advantage. It is recognized that the attitudes and perceptions of non-Indigenous managers and employees can create either of the following: a welcoming and inclusive environment or one contributing to discrimination and exclusion. What challenges or barriers do Indigenous applicants face when seeking employment in Canada? How would you convince your company's managers and lower-level supervisors of the importance of diversity and inclusion of Indigenous candidates?
