Many economic lessons learned over the past century (managing demand through active fiscal and monetary policies, promoting growth of long-run supply through competition, and managing risks in the financial sector) still seem to be poorly understood by the general public and even some policymakers (e.g., think of fiscal austerity in a recession, trade protectionism, and the 'This Time is Different' mentality). Why is there a disconnect?
