You've just been hired into a small but successful and growing family business with a loyal customer base established over 10 years. They have no formal management systems (e.g. communication is mostly verbal). The business installs and services natural gas compressors for industrial and commercial applications, most recently natural gas vehicle refuelling stations for the utility industry across Canada. By default, one of your new job responsibilities is health and safety. The company has 15 employees: the Owner, 2 office staff, 2 warehouse staff and 11 gas technicians. The gas technicians are licenced trades and either work in small crews of 2-3 people for an installation project on a construction site or by themselves on service calls at a client site. The scope of their work involves low or high pressure gas piping and compressor mechanical maintenance including trouble shooting of low voltage electrical compressor controls when required. The majority of electrical work is contracted to a licenced electrical subcontractor. The technicians work mostly in the field including significant time and distance driving to and from client sites. The company has never experienced a Workers' Compensation claim.
