• Oman's national rail network
• Project cost: not stated/no estimates/no established clear figure
• Oman's 1061km national railway network is part of the proposed inter-GCC rail network that will run from Kuwait to Muscat, and onward to Salalah and possibly to Yemen.
• The 1,061-kilometre national network will be built in phases.Phase one consists of four segments: a 242km section from Sohar Port to Al Misfah in Muscat, along with an 8km spur line to Sohar Railway Yard and a 20km link from Al Misfah to Muscat Central Station; a 486km line from Muscat to Duqm Port, and an 84km link from Sinaw to Ibra; a 136km track from Sohar to Al Ain with a 27km spur to Buraimi; and 58km from Sohar Port to the UAE at Khatmat Malaha.
• Oman's eighth five-year plan runs from 2011-2015 and includes more than $11bn for infrastructure projects and big-ticket items.Much of the expansion is fuelled by the desire to alleviate pressure on Muscat's main port and airport, transforming the capital into a more attractive tourist destination and moving heavy industry out of the city.
• That has fuelled expansion in places like Sohar, which has developed an integrated port, free zone, industrial zone and airport project called Gateway Sohar. It's an enormous project that has seen billions of foreign investments pour into the northern region of the country.
• Muscat's push out has also extended south in to Salalah where the deep-water port is undergoing rapid and major changes. The freezone is also being expanded, and new industries are also being funded to help boost the local and national economies.
• Airports account for $4.29bn of the funds set aside under the eighth five-year plan, with expansion projects in Muscat, Salalah and Sohar underway. Oman has also allocated $3.2bn for roads; $1.3bn for seaports; $1.17bn for water and $1.16bn for housing projects.
• Oman is also pushing forward with plans to implement a national railway, with five consortia in the running for the detailed engineering design of the proposed 1000km-plus network.
