Assessment 1
Introduction of Project 1
This Diploma is preparing and or improving your ability to lead people and manage a unit of the business. This Unit deals directly with managing that Unit of the business. In this first project you need to be able to make an analysis of this business unit and be aware of all components of this.
Project 1 - Identify Markets for the Business Unit.
You are employed to set up the Transport and Logistic Business Unit. for National Camper Trailers, based in Melbourne.
This project needs you to analyse the market space you're employed in. You will need to access some information from Moodle on this organisation to answer the questions posed to you before you can manage the business Unit.
You need to be aware of the organisation, its role, its objectives and its operation.
Your requirement for this project, is to prepare a report using the information requested in the questions below. Your report can include Charts and Graphs to best illustrate the information you are presenting. You should prepare your report as though you are to present it to the CEO in a Half Hour presentation. So it can include Scripts, PowerPoint, Charts and a written presentation of at least 1000 words. Your report should follow the guidelines and chapters as listed below for the flow effect.
Ensure that you upload all your developed evidence for the presentation to the assessment site.
Here are the lists of questions that your report must answer.
Our Customer Base:
1. Who are our existing customers? How can we identify them, and how can we get feedback from them on our performance in service to them?
2. What are some planned improvements we can make to increase our customer service?
3. How can we increase our customer base? Who are potential customers and how would we target them?
Our Business Unit Goals:
4. What are our identified goals within our current business plan?
5. We have goals but how can we achieve them? Document the KPIs we have set for these goals.
6. We have established our goals, now we need to break them down. What are our Short / Medium / Long term strategies to achieve the business unit goals?
7. As with all goals and targets we need to have contingencies in place if Plan A doesn't work or hits a glitch. Identify contingency plans for each goal.
Know the Competition.
8. When analysing a business, we need to obtain information to assist in planning and understanding the business environment and competitors. It's also helpful to complete a SWOR matrix. Strengths - Weakness - Opportunity - Risk.
a. Who are our competitors?
b. What are our potential Opportunities?
c. What are the weaknesses of our Business?
9. You must identify just what available resources we can take into account when assessing our customers' needs and our business objectives. What are these?

For Project 2 you need to delve deeper into your business unit to further understand how to manage a business unit. You will need to assess National Camper Documents on Moodle including but not limited to:
NCT Business Plan
HR Operational Plan
HR Strategic Plan
HR Report
NCT Budget
Balance Sheet
YTD P&L with Forecast
HR Policies & Conduct
This project requires you to write a report from you to the CEO to show that you can obtain and analyse the findings. Follow the questions below and make a written report of not less than 1000 words.
Finances of the Business Unit.
1. Discuss how your Business Unit plans and schedules its financial flows.
2. When running a business unit, you need to ensure that at all times you are aware of how the Unit is performing. You need to analyse costs, resource usage and budget requirements and interpret this information as to the Profit / Productivity performance of the Business Unit.
Include in your report information on the following;
a. Information on costs;
b. Resource utilisation; and
c. Budget.
Resources of the Business Unit.
3. Another major resource for a Business Unit is staff. You need to show how staff and physical resources are identified to meet the business requirements. What systems and processes are in place to monitor that the resources are being utilised as planned and to schedule?
4. Does the Business Unit have systems in place to act as contingency if there are problems with resource usage to be investigated and rectified?
5. When assessing the staff resource, we need to look at our Job Profiles and training to these staffing levels. Determine job profiles and describe how resources are made available for training to meet business objectives?
6. When training staff in their Job roles, how can we ensure that all business objectives and relevant company Policies & Procedures are explained?
7. What systems are in place to ensure resource acquisition and usage is managed and business objectives are achieved?
Business Unit Performance.
8. Within the Business Unit the main aim for Unit performance is to achieve Profit / Productivity targets. What systems are in place to assess the progress of these plans?
9. Describe the effective actions that the Business Unit has taken to reduce costs thus enhancing the value to customers and the organisation, what recommendations for variations to the operational plans have been negotiated and approved by all relevant stakeholders.
10. Describe the performance reports that the Business Unit generates in accordance with the organisations procedures and policies and relevant Legislation.
11. Describe how the Business Unit would adapt to difference in equipment in accordance with standard operating procedures, and how are these controlled when operating electronic communications equipment and protocols.
12. Describe how the Business Unit handles the need to report and/or rectifying identified problems promptly, in accordance with regulatory requirements and workplace procedures.

Answers should be in attached in a word document in a report format with between 50 to 200 words per question.
Use your experience working in the logistic and transport business unit to fully answer the following questions.
1. When managing a T & L Business Unit how can you ensure that all employees are current in their competencies while working in the functioning tasks, and that all required resources are available?
2. When operating a Business Unit what are the relevant Australian and International standards and associated certification requirements that must be applied to the Business Unit?
3. When operating a Business Unit what are the relevant Australian and International regulations, codes of practice and legislative requirements that must be applied to the Unit?
4. The operational policies and priorities, work systems, resources, and workplace operating systems that may be applied to the Business unit are? (Please list)
5. How can a Transport and Logistics Business Unit control hazards and risks that can, and will arise and what are some of the examples that you would have to manage? (List a minimum of two (2))
6. How would the Management of a T & L business unit obtain information on key competitor's operations strengths and weaknesses?
7. How would the Management of a T & L business unit obtain information on market intelligence that is relevant to the business's operations?
8. What would be some of the workplace policies and procedures that would need to be in pace to manage a T & L Unit?
9. Why would it be essential that a Business Unit had standards, Policies and Procedures for Customer Service and Quality in place?
10. What are some of the common problems that may occur when managing a transport and logistics business unit, and what action that can be taken to report or resolve these problems?
11. In a business unit what are the relevant work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) and environmental procedures and regulations that would be required to in place?
12. Provide one example from your experience working in the Transport and Logistics industry where you have prioritising work and coordinated self and others in achieve desired business activities.
