Assessment Task - Observations / Demonstrations

This assessment requires you to demonstrate your ability to manage construction work by completing a significant work assignment. The assessor may provide the response, based on the observation (direct / indirect / supplementary) in the checklist (marking guide) given in this task.

• Direct - such as an observation of workplace performance by an assessor
• Indirect - such as a portfolio of evidence
• Supplementary - such as supervisor reports.

The task has assessment activities, designed to assess your skills, knowledge and performance, as required to show competency in this unit. You should complete these as stated below and as instructed by your trainer / assessor.
Skills, knowledge and performance may be termed as:

• Skills - skill requirements, required skills, essential skills, foundation skills
• Knowledge - knowledge requirements, required knowledge, essential knowledge, knowledge evidence
• Performance - evidence requirements, critical aspects of assessment, performance evidence.

Section A: Skills Activity

The Skills Activity is designed to be a series of demonstrative tasks that should be assessed by observation. It will demonstrate all of the skills required for this unit of competency - your assessor will provide further instructions to you, if necessary.

Section B: Knowledge Activity (Q & A)

The Knowledge Activity, in addition to task 1, is designed to be a verbal questionnaire where the assessor asks you a series of questions to confirm your competency for all of the required knowledge in the unit of competency.
Section C: Performance Activity

The Performance Activity is designed to be a practical activity performed either in the workplace or a simulated environment. You should demonstrate the required practical tasks for the unit of competency and be observed by the assessor.
If necessary, for the activities, you should attach completed written answers, portfolios or any evidence of competency.

Section A: Skills Activity

Objective: To provide you with an opportunity to show you have the required skills for this unit. This activity will enable you to demonstrate the following skills:
» Application of design concepts and principles
» Communication skills to:
o consult with industry professionals
o enable clear and direct communication, using questioning to identify and confirm requirements, share information, listen and understand
o read and interpret:
- codes and standards
- legislative and planning requirements
- plans, specifications and drawings
- other relevant documentation from a wide range of sources
o use and interpret non-verbal communication
o use language and concepts appropriate to cultural differences
• Numeracy skills to apply measurements and calculations.

Answer the activity in as much detail as possible, considering your organisational requirements.

1. Produce and submit a plan for a construction project and demonstrate that you can apply design concepts and principles to medium rise buildings.

2. As a simulated workplace activity, you must complete the following:

For a medium rise building project, you must read and interpret building plans, specifications and any other relevant building documentation to plan the implementation of work. You will need to document a planned schedule to show how work will be carried out. This must include the following:

» Determine the relevant NCC(BCA) performance requirements, Australian standards and any other guidance that is applicable to the project
» Reference to structural principles for medium rise buildings
» Plans to manage safe working practices and WHS/OHS legal requirements.

In order to complete the schedule, you should consult with industry professionals (or your Trainer) as required to confirm work details and timings. You must:

» Be clear and direct when communicating
» Use questioning and listening skills as needed to clarify requirements
» Share information about the build so that schedules can be properly arranged
» Use language and concepts appropriate to cultural differences.
» Consult face-to-face in verbal discussions as well as using other forms of communication.

3. Complete one project task/document that requires you to perform numerical calculations. This may include:

» Building approval plans
» Contract plans
» Design and specifications
» Engineer's footing design and specifications
» Original contour survey plans

» Registered plans
» Retaining walls and tanking design and specifications
» Site plans
» Soils investigation reports.

Section B: Knowledge Activity

Objective: To provide you with an opportunity to show you have the required knowledge for this unit. The answers to the following questions will enable you to demonstrate your knowledge of:
• Applications of structural principles in buildings
• Building Code of Australia (BCA) and Australian Standards
• Design principles and behaviour of structural members undergoing stress, strain, compression, bending or combined actions
• Interpretation and analysis of work drawings and specifications
• Nature of materials and the effect on performance
• OHS and organisational quality procedures and processes.

Answer each question in as much detail as possible, considering the organisational requirements for each one. You may use Response Guide provided in Task 1.

Section C: Performance Activity

Objective: To provide you with an opportunity to demonstrate the required performance elements for this unit. This activity will enable you to demonstrate the following performance evidence:
• Plan and implement the erection or demolition of buildings in compliance with relevant legislation
• Interpret and apply relevant documentation and codes
• Accurately apply design principles relating to performance
• Identify typical faults and problems and the action required to rectify them.

Answer the activity in as much detail as possible, considering the organisational requirements.

In a simulated workplace environment, demonstrate that you can plan and implement the erection or demolition of a medium rise building, in compliance with relevant legislation. You will need to do the following:

» Interpret and apply relevant documentation and codes
» Accurately apply design principles relating to performance
» Identify typical faults and problems and the action required to rectify them.
