A sample of wine undergoing malolactic fermentation is blotted onto chromatography paper and dipped into an aqueous butanol solvent. After this solvent has travelled 6.0 cm up the paper, bromocresol green is used to visualize the acids present.

a. Yellow spots are found at 1.9 cm and 4.4 cm. What are the Rf values and are these acids?

b. Is the malolactic fermentation complete, and can you be sure?
