A criminal attempt requires six defined elements to meet the legal definition of a crime.[1] The six elements consist of conceiving, evaluating, intending, preparing, commencing, and completing actions.[2] "A" took significant steps toward committing the crime of intentional wounding in this instance by pointing the pistol at B, requesting money, and firing a shot during the unexpected altercation. "An attempt is an adjunct crime and requires a so-called target or substantive offense."[3] "A"'s actions "constitute a substantial step, beyond mere preparation, toward committing the offense.[4] "A" is guilty of an attempted crime of malicious wounding. Although "A" may contend that he had no particular intention to kill, maim, disfigure, or cripple "B," the entirety of the evidence may indicate that "A," having met and employed the six-stage process, did complete the legal definition of a criminal attempt.
