Question 1. What are the pros and cons of being born a male in American culture and society?
Question 2. What information did you find most useful and interesting from this week's exploration of "Arousal and Response?"
The subject of sexual arousal is an arousing subject in many ways. Take the Grafenberg Spot, or G-spot, for instance. Dr. Ernest Grafenberg noted in a paper in 1950 that there ap- peared to exist an erotic spot on the front wall of the vagina which when sexual arousal was optimal actually resulted in a fluid ejaculation in women as in men! Nearly fifty years later, the verdict is still out on whether or not the G-spot exists.
It is also interesting to note that during sexual arousal, certain physiological mechanisms kick in. First, vasocongestion occurs, the filling of blood vessels and tissues with blood in both the penis and vagina. Secondly, myotonia occurs, an increase in muscular tension. Together these occurrences have been shown to contribute to some very interesting side effects in certain people, among them: stutterers speak more easily during sex; the gagging reflex lessens, thus allowing for ease in fellatio; certain forms of paralysis lessen, resulting in better coordination; allergy symptoms decrease; bleeding from cuts slow; and pain thresholds ebb, accounting for why some sadomasochistic practices can be endured. 53 Nature has made sex quite an elixir, I'd say.
