The American government, in the 1780s, could not pay its debts. Actually, it was worse than that: the national government had trouble even making regular interest payments on these debts. So...what was the problem? Why was it so difficult for the American government to be financially responsible after the Revolution? Also, did this even matter? In other words, why not just ignore the debt and move on?
